Drawing Exercise #7

Geometry Drawing Assignment

Regular Septagon

The purpose of this exercise is to give you, the student, practice in determining the angle in degrees for each vertex of a regular polygon, then to draw a regular polygon with the use of a protractor, compass, and a ruler.

Please take your time as you draw the actions stipulated in each direction. Use pencil. Do not erase arc marks, measurement marks, or any other aspect of the drawing task which is needed to draw the item. Start by determining that the angle formed will be based on this formula:

(number of sides minus 2) times 180. This result is then divided by the number of interior angles to get the interior angle measurement in degrees. This is the same procedure used regardless of the number of sides to the regular polygon.

1. Draw a regular polygon in the approximate center of a sheet of 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper that is 2 inches on a side, with a ruler, protractor, and a compass. Start with a base straight line of 2 inches. With the protractor, mark an angle based on the above calculation. Draw a line from the right side of the base through this point. Then measure out that distance. Continue this around the figure until you have returned to the left side of the base. The last measurement should be the same as the other measurements or the figure was not drawn accurately. Redraw as needed so the last measurement is accurate.

2. Draw perpendicular bisector of each side of the figure.

3. Inscribe the largest circle possible with the same center point as the intersection of all the bisectors, such that the circle is tangent to all sides of the figure.

4. Draw a circle which circumscribes the figure. Be sure it is tangent to all vertices formed at intersections of sides.

When complete, it should look something like this:
